The Platinum airline benefit covers eligible incidental charges from your selected airline. It is not a general airfare credit.

How to use the benefit

  1. Select the airline you expect to use for qualifying incidental fees.
  2. Check the fee against the issuer's exclusions before paying.
  3. Pay the airline with the eligible card and keep the itemized receipt.
  4. Check the benefit tracker and statement; contact Amex if a qualifying credit has not appeared after eight weeks.

Restrictions and mistakes to avoid

  • Airfare, upgrades, mileage purchases and gift cards are excluded.
  • Fees must be submitted by the selected airline; a separate merchant can change eligibility.
  • You may change the selected airline in January. Do not assume a later change is available.

What is it actually worth?

If you already expect $120 of eligible bag fees, budget $120 of value. The remaining $80 of advertised capacity does not become savings until you have another qualifying expense. This is especially relevant when airline status or another card already covers your bags.

These examples are hypothetical. Use the purchases you would have made anyway, include remaining charges, and avoid counting the same saving twice.

Common questions

Does this cover plane tickets?

No. Budget it for qualifying incidentals, not the ticket price.

Which airline should I select?

Choose the eligible airline where you realistically expect incidental charges, after accounting for fees already waived by status or other benefits.
